Facilities And Supporting Facilities

A. Campus

MSI-UII is located in Jl. Demangan Baru No. 24, 2nd floor, which is UII’s-building. Its location is quite condusive because it is far from city-noise but easy-reached. The facilities are rooms for office, library, and class seminar. Those are new and renovated with qualified standard and AC-rooms.

The instruction is held in four rooms, which are comfortable. Each room is equipped with desks and chairs, movable white board and overhead projector. Those equipments are in well condition. If required in turn, those rooms are equipped with video projector, TV and 3 LCD and 3 Notebook. Based on the lecturing frequencies and participants for each session, thus, those equipments and room size are representative and adequate.

B. Library

The library stores various collections of books, references, special publication, and other works. Recently, there are 3183 titles of books and references with 8340 exemplars; 51 of scientific journals with 125 exemplars; 43 of dictionaries and encyclopedias; 17 of electronic CD of library; and 444 theses and desertations.

The library has been establishing external networks with other libraries around Yogyakarta. Internally, it has a network with the library of Islamic Studies faculty and center library of UII. To support the network of both internal libraries, MSI-UII utilizes Library Information Management System (SIMPUS), in which the students can access information through computers available in the library room.

As a strategic planning in order to increase the library facility, MSI-UII has been allocating 10% of its budget for library development. The library is not only for students of MSI-UII, but also for those who are from other institutions of the same fields. The budget is used to increase the collection of books, magazines, seminar papers, research findings, and scientific works of lecturers that can be used as representative and qualified references.

The types and quantity of library collection are required based on:

  • the needs of science and knowledge development in line with the four study programs existing in MSI-UII;
  • the proposal of students or lecturers;
  • the publisher’s information (publication catalog) and other parties (agents) about selected collection.

Other way of increasing the collection of the library is through:

  • Xeroxing seminar papers and proceedings in line with the four concentration;
  • exchanging scientific journals with other institutions;
  • obtaining books’ donation from other countries.;
  • obtaining the books from Department of Religious Affairs.

By the quantity and update policy above, appropriatness and sufficiency of the library collection are always controllable. Each title has four exemplars with 10 days maximum of borrowing. Through this regulation and policy, each student and member of the library can have a saticfactory service.

For comfort, the room is equipped with AC (air conditioner), internet facility that can access information from various sources.

C. Laboratory

Laboratories of MSI-UII are two, i.e. (1) “shari’ah bank” laboratory for Islamic Economics concentration and (2) “school” for Islamic Education concentration.

Until the 8th years of establishment, MSI-UII has Islamic economics laboratory, i.e. Shari’ah Micro Finance Institution. The institution is owned by a MSI-UII alumnae who is willing to provide his institution to be laboratory for Islamic Economics.

In July 2005, MSI-UII has achieved a memorandum of agreement with several banks of shari’ah Credits, in which MSI-UII is as pioneer and commissaries. Those banks also become laboratory of Islamic Economics MSI-UII.

On the other side, MSI UII is also invited to cooperate with NGOs to establish BMT Assistance Institution (namely: Muamalat Indonesia Synergy), that is designed to take role as Indonesian Bank for conventional banks. The institution is not only as Indonesian Bank, but also as operational Shari’ah Monitoring Board. It means that the board will actively survey and monitor the products developed by shari’ah micro credit institute (BMT) all over Indonesia.

For the Islamic education concentration, MSI-UII uses a school provided by UII as its laboratory, i.e. Senior High School (SMA) UII. Undergraduate students of Islamic education study program also use the school. It has been equipped by adequate facilities. For language development, MSI-UII may use a language laboratory (Arabic and English) with qualified standard.

D. Website

Its establishment is based on the need of information in order to expand its international network through information technology. In the website, there is a discussion forum guided by MSI-UII lecturers and an intellectual forum. Students in the forum could be as paper writers and lecturers are asked to allow their students to publish the students’ final papers in the website. Some lecture’s materials are put in the www.msi-uii.net or magister.islamic.uii.ac.id

F . Journal “Millah”

The journal has a function to facilitate students in their scientific work publication. It has been published since 2000 and been respectively accredited A in the year of 2000 and 2003.

G. Alumni Association

Each alumna will automatically become a member of alumni family of UII. This assocaiation is not a part of UII’s management, but it is an independent organization. However, the activities are oriented to assist the development of UII pursuant to the principles of its establishment. Therefore, the assocaiation has been put in the Statute of UII Article 21 stated that “Organisation and activities around university arranged together with the association. Based on the statute, university decides to have Vice Rector III and Vice III concerning students and alumni.

Specifically, MSI-UII publishes Bulletin “Safiria” in order to bridge communication between MSI-UII and alumni. Furthermore, the bulletin is to build an intense interaction among MSI-UII, students and alumni through asking their paper or article, distributing bulletin to students and alumni.

In a certain period, MSI-UII in its visiting to some provinces attempts to socialize the program, to meet the alumni obtaining information about the alumni, and to discuss strategis planning for MSI-UII development. From the strategy, an alumni development group is able to socialize the program effectively. The fact is that some recommendation of students for study in MSI-UII comes from alumni.
